Concerns raised about risk of Lyme disease as Fife figures revealed for first time – The Courier

© Supplied Concerns have been raised that visitors and residents in Fife could be more susceptible to Lyme disease over the coming months after the scale of the problem became clear. Fife’s newly-published joint public health protection plan has revealed there were 31 cases of the dangerous bacterial infection recorded in the kingdom last year – the first time instances of Lyme disease have been properly documented by health professionals in the region. With Fife Council cutting back on grass cutting and pursuing a policy of ‘rewilding’ areas to preserve resources, there are fears the number of infections could soar as people run more risk of contracting it from tick bites. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) estimates there are around 900 cases each year in the UK but some estimates ...

Drought conditions reducing ticks and cases of Lyme disease – NewsCenterMaine.com WCSH-WLBZ

ORONO, Maine — While the drought is causing problems for a number of farmers across the state, there is an upside. Experts say the hot, dry conditions are helping reduce the population of deer ticks, which carry Lyme disease. Researchers at the Maine Cooperative Tick Lab in Orono have seen a drop in tick samples over the summer months. The drought is making a big impact on the nymph tick, which is the size of a poppy seed. They emerge in June and July, the last stage before it becomes an adult tick.  Ticks thrive in wet and humid weather. The dry spell is causing populations to be far less active and go into a hibernation-like state.  "The number of nymphs that were submitted to our lab was less than half of what it was last year, we are really trending down," Griffin Dil...

Ticked off: WVU researchers target Lyme disease vaccine with aid of $1.9M federal grant – My Buckhannon

Pesky, yet dangerous ticks are no longer latching exclusively onto hunters and outdoor enthusiasts. Milder winters and disrupted habitats have driven them out of the woods, with Lyme disease cases in the United States tripling since the late 1990s.  Now researchers at West Virginia University are working toward a vaccine that prevents humans from contracting the tick-borne illness that afflicts more than 300,000 Americans a year.  Mariette Barbier, assistant professor in the School of Medicine’s Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Cell Biology, is leading the five-year project, which received $1.9 million from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. Joining her on the project are Timothy Driscoll, assistant professor of bio...
